OCC Rainbow Maker: Wishing You a Happy Birthday

This is the second card I made for the Online Card Class Rainbow Maker.  This watercolor background was created on Strathmore Bristol Smooth Cardstock.  I think that the results are more streaky, but that is something that watercolor is known for.  I think I will experiment more with this medium to see if I can get a better blend in the future.

I think these bright and colorful backgrounds really show off a white die cut sentiment.  For this card I used Papertrey Ink’s Text Block Birthday Portrait.  It was cut three times from Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock and adhered together with Elmer’s Craft Bond Spray Adhesive.

A top folding cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock.  The watercolor panel was cut down using the Simon Says Stamp Bundle of Stitched Shapes Rectangle.  A rectangle of Darice Sticky Back Foam Sheet was cut 1/8″ smaller and adhered to the back.  Tombo Mono Multi Glue was used to adhere the foam mounted panel to the cardbase.  I like the white border that using the SSS rectangle leaves.  The sentiment die cut was adhered to the watercolor background using Ranger Multi Medium Matte and the card was done.

Another great masculine birthday card.

OCC Rainbow Maker: Birthday Hooray

I love the Online Card Classes that are hosted by Kristine Werner and Jennifer McGuire.  I have learned so much by taking these classes and feel that my cardmaking skills have increased by watching the techniques and instructions that are shared.  Recently I have been participating in the Rainbow Maker class and have a few cards that I will be posting using techniques learned in the class.

The first is this birthday card using a watercolor background and a coverup die from Avery Elle.  I love the way it turned out.

I began by watercoloring a rainbow background using my Mission Gold Watercolors on Canson XL 140# Watercolor Paper.  Colors used are listed below.

While the watercolor background was drying a die cut three of Avery Elle’s Horizontal Stripes Coverup from Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock and adhered them together using Elmer’s Craft Bond Spray Adhesive.  This die also cuts the “hooray!” sentiment.

I adhered the coverup and sentiment to the watercolor background with Ranger Multi Medium Matte.  A top folding A2 Cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock and the focal image and die were adhered to the front using Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the card was done.

I think this will make a great masculine birthday card, which are always a challenge to design and create.

A Masculine Hello

I was in need of a masculine hello card and wanted something simple.  I pulled out some paper from the Craft Smith Indigo Gold 12 x 12 Paper Pad to create this card and really liked the finished card.

A rectangle of the navy blue cardstock was cut using the rectangle from Simon Says Stamp Bundle of Stitched Shapes  It was adhered to a top folding A2 cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.

In the same paper pack was some gold and blue diagonal stripped paper.  The word “hello” was die cut from this paper using My Favorite Things Happy Hellos Die. The word was cut an additional three times with scrap navy blue paper and all were adhered together using Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  A thin strip of the same diagonal paper was added to the left of the navy blue cardstock and then the negative of the die cut word was used to ensure the “hello” word was straight and spaced evenly.  Each letter was adhered using the same glue and the card was done.

  • Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock
  • My Favorite Things Happy Hellos Die

A second card was made from the same cardstock using the negative of the hello die cut from the diagonal cardstock, which was die cut using the rectangle from Simon Says Stamp Bundle of Stitched Shapes.  A piece of navy blue cardstock was added behind the die cut word.  Darice Sticky Back Foam was cut 1/8” smaller than the focal rectangle and adhered to the back.  An A2 cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock and the stripped paper was adhered using Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  A small strip of navy blue cardstock was added just above the “hello” word and the second card was done.

Moon Lake Masculine Birthday Card

I have had the stamp set Moon Lake from Stampin’ Up for some time and decided to pull it out again to make a masculine birthday card.  I really like the way it turned out.

I stamped the focal image on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock with Hero Arts India Ink Black.  The birds are from Gina K. Designs By the Sea and the sentiment if from Clearly Besotted’s It’s Your Birthday, all stamped with Hero Arts India Ink Black.

I wanted to ink blend a background to add interest and dimension to the focal image.  A small circle was cut from a 3 x 3 full adhesive sticky note using Simon Says Stamp Nested Circle Die and adhered in the upper left to preserve that area for the sun as the rest of the image was ink blended with Inkylicious Ink Dusters and Distress Inks: Mowed Lawn, Peeled Paint, Tumbled Glass, and Broken China.  Once I was satisfied with the background the negative of the post-it was placed in the appropriate spot and the sun was ink blended using Distress Fossilized Amber.

Once the focal image was finished, it was run through Big Shot with the largest Simon Says Stamp Stitched Rectangles.  A rectangle 1/8″ larger was cut from Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock and adhered to the back of the focal image with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  Darice Sticky Back Foam was cut just smaller than the black cardstock and adhered to the back of the focal image using the same glue.

A side folding A2 cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock.  The focal image was adhered with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the card was done.

By the Sea Masculine Birthday Card

There are beautiful images in the Gina K. Designs By the Sea stamp set that make great masculine cards.  For this card I chose the boat nestled by a tree and stamped it with Memento Rich Cocoa Ink and then ink blended with Ranger Distress Ink Antique Linen.

It is a simple design and didn’t take very much time to create.  The images were stamped on Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock.  The sentiment is from the Clearly Besotted It’s Your Birthday stamp set with the same Memento Rich Cocoa Ink.

Once the card was stamped and blended I ran it through the Big Shot with Simon Says Stamp Stitched Rectangles.  To help the focal image stand out and to accent the brown ink Gina K. Designs 120# Dark Chocolate Cardstock was cut 1/8″ larger than the focal image rectangle and adhered to the back with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  A Darice Sticky Back Foam Sheet was cut with the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Rectangle and adhered to the back of the focal image.  It was then glued to an A2 Top Folding Cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock.

I didn’t like how stark the contrast was between the focal image and the cardbase and so the edges of the cardbase were ink blended with Antique Linen Distress Ink and the card was done.

There’s No Such Thing as Too Many Candles Birthday Card

I’m always thinking of cards that can be used for masculine birthday cards.  About half of the birthday cards I send are for people who are senior citizens (over 60).  I really liked the sentiment from My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments “There’s no such thing as too many candles,” and decided to use this as the theme for this card.

I recently purchased Impression Obsession’s Candle Block stamp and die and thought the candles would be the perfect size to put a lot of them on a birthday cake.  So, I searched my dies and decided to use the layered cake from Hero Arts Make a Wish stamp and die.  I cut the cake layers from a scrap of brown cardstock and shaded it with Copic Markers (colors listed below).  The cake stand was cut from Paper Accents Gold Mirror Cardstock.

Since the cake was chocolate, I decided I wanted to have a complimentary patterned paper background.  I found this chevron paper from My Mind’s Eye Adventure Paper Pad and die cut it with the largest Simon Says Stamp Stitched Rectangles.  It was adhered to a top folding A2 cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock using Tombo Mono Glue Runner Dot Adhesive.

The sentiment was stamped with VersaMark Ink on a scrap of the brown cardstock and then heat embossed with Ranger Fine Detail Gold Embossing Powder.  It was adhered to the card front using 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape.

The candles were stamped multiple times with the Memento Inks listed below and then die cut with the matching die.  Candles in the back where adhered directly to the cardbase and the candles in the front with thin strips of 3M 1/2″ Fun Foam.  Gold Stickles was used for the flame of the candles and the card was done.

Patterned Paper Stashes Masculine Birthday Card

This card would be perfect for any man who wears a mustache.  It is simple to create and takes very little time to assemble.

A rectangle of the patterned paper from the Paper Studio Glasses, Staches, & Ties 12 x 12 Paper Pack was die cut using Simon Says Stamp Bundle of Stitched Shapes.  A rectangle of brown cardstock from my stash was cut 1/8″ larger with a paper trimmer and both were adhered together with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.

A top folding cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock, but I didn’t like how stark the contrast was between the patterned paper rectangle and the white cardbase, so a rectangle of Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock was cut using the WPlus9 Gift Card Layers Die, which cut a rectangle the same size as the front of an A2 cardbase.  The black rectangle was adhered to the front of the cardbase with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  Darice Sticky Back Fun Foam was added to the back of the patterned paper rectangle and then adhered to the black card front using the same glue.

The sentiment from the Lawn Fawn Happy Happy Happy Stamp Set was stamped with VersaMark Ink and heat embossed with ZING Chestnut Embossing Powder and die cut with the matching die.  The secondary sentiment uses the same ink and embossing powder and was placed directly below the die cut word and the card was done.

Patterned Paper Masculine It’s Your Birthday Card

This is another masculine birthday card that primarily uses patterned paper to add focal interest.

A rectangle of patterned paper from Paper Studio Glasses, Staches, & Ties 12 x 12 Paper Pack was cut using Simon Says Stamp Stitched Rectangles. Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock was cut 1/8″ larger and both were adhered together using Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  A rectangle of Darice Sticky Back Fun Foam was added to the back to add dimension to the card.

I found some matching blue cardstock in my stash of paper and stamped the eye glasses from the Simon Says Stamp set I See You twice with Versafine Onyx Black Ink and then embossed with Hero Arts Clear Embossing Powder.  The eye glasses were then fussy cut, Inkssentials Glossy Accents were added to the glasses, and then they were set aside to dry while the rest of the card was assembled.

The chevron strip from Simon Says Stamp I See You was stamped and embossed with the same ink and embossing powder on the blue paper and then trimmed and placed on the patterned paper rectangle to determine placement for the sentiment.  “I See You” was stamped with Versafine Onyx Black Ink and heat embossed with Hero Arts Clear Embossing Powder.  The Secondary sentiment was stamped with VersaMark Ink and heat embossed with Ranger Fine Detail Gold Embossing Powder.  The Chevron strip was adhered to the left of the patterned paper rectangle with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape.  The patterned paper rectangle was then adhered to an A2 top folding cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock by adding Tombo Mono Multi Glue to the fun foam.  The first eye glasses were adhered directly to the patterned paper with the same glue and the second was adhered with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape and the card was done.

Patterned Paper Tools Masculine Birthday Card

You can make some great masculine birthday cards with nothing more than patterned paper.  This card utilizes Paper Studio Glasses, Staches, & Ties 12 x 12 Paper Pack.

Some of the tools were fussy cut from the patterned paper and then shading was added with Copic markers.  A rectangle of Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock was cut using the Lawn Fawn Small Stitched Stackable Rectangles.  The tools were placed on the rectangle to determine where to stamp the sentiment from My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments in Memento Rich Cocoa Ink. To add interest to the focal image the rectangle was run through the Sizzix Big Shot with the Lifestyle Crafts Chain Embossing Folder.  The tools were adhered to the front of the rectangle with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape.  Three antique bronze brads were added to the bottom of the rectangle to add balance.

A rectangle of the patterned paper was cut using the largest Lawn Fawn Small Stitched Stackable Rectangles.  Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock was cut 1/8″ larger and both were adhered together with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and then Darice Sticky Back Fun Foam was added to the back.

A top folding cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock and the patterned paper rectangle was adhered using Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  The focal image rectangle was adhered to the center of the card with the same glue and the card was done.

Patterned Paper Masculine Fisherman Birthday Card

I really like the Stampin’ Up Angler stamp.  Even when it doesn’t have any coloring it makes a nice masculine card.  The patterned paper from Paper Studio Glasses, Staches is the perfect background.

The image was stamped on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock with Memento London Fog Ink and then die cut using the second largest Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Stackable Rectangles.  The sentiment from My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments was stamped below the image with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink.  To balance out the focal image three small silver brads were added at the top.  Darice Sticky Back Fun Foam was added to the back of the rectangle.

A top folding A2 Cardbase was made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock.  The patterned paper was die cut using the largest Lawn Fawn Small Stitched Stackable Rectangles.  A rectangle was cut from Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock 1/8″ larger than the patterned paper and both were adhered together using Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  Darice Sticky Back Fun Foam was added to the back and the patterned paper background was adhered to the cardbase with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  The focal image was then adhered using the same glue and the card was done.
