Masculine Birthday with MFT Chevron Coverup II

Great cards can be made using negative elements from a graphic die. This card that was made using the negative space leftover from My Favorite Things Chevron Coverup.

A piece of Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock and used the Ranger Mini Ink Blending Tool to create an ombre of color with the following Distress Inks: Mustard Seed, Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade, Ripe Persimmon, Fired Brick.  The panel was run through the Big Shot with My Favorite Things Chevron Coverup.

To add dimension to the chevron stripes I cut thin strips of 3M 1/2″ foam tape and applied it to the back of each strip.  (In retrospect I think it would have been much easier to cut the die again using Darice Adhesive Fun Foam.)  Using the cutout panel the strips were adhered to the front of a top folding A2 cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock.

Matching balloons were die cut from scraps of paper with Lawn Fawn Party Balloons and adhered using 3M 1/2″ Foam tape, with the front balloon using a double thickness of foam tape.  The balloon ties were made from red DFN Craft Thread.  To keep the loops I put a dollop of Tombo Mono Multi Glue on my thumb and applied it to the thread.  This allows it to stiffen and it can be shaped while still wet and will dry in the desired shape.

The sentiment is from My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments stamped with VersaMark Ink on Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock and heat embossed with Gina K. Designs Fine Detail White Embossing Powder and then adhered to the front of the card with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape.

Happy Birthday (Power Poppy Peonies)

The card was made using the Power Poppy Peonies Digital Stamp, which was printed on Canson 90# Cold Press Watercolor and cut with the Silhouette Cameo.

00300w

The color of the peonies in real life are more purple than are shown here. Colors from Winsor & Newton Artist Grade 24 Half Pan Watercolor set were used to watercolor the flowers.

A rectangle was die cut from Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock and then embossed with the Darice Basketweave Embossing Folder.  The panel was adhered to a top folded A2 cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock using Darice Adhesive Foam.

The focal image was adhered to the embossed panel with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape.  The sentiment is from the My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments stamp set.  It was stamped on Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock with VersaMark Ink and embossing with Gina K. Pure Innocence Scientist Birthday Card

I am surrounded my scientists in my household.  My husband’s degree is in biology, my oldest daughter has a degree in bio chemistry and her husband is a physical therapist, my oldest son has a doctorate in geo physics and his wife has a masters in geology, my youngest son’s degree is in chemistry, along with his beautiful wife, and my youngest daughter is a pediatrician.  And then there’s me who doesn’t do anything with science, went to secretarial college, and loves to create.  Go figure.

Both of my daughters-in-law have birthdays in November.  I am always looking for stamp sets that I think my children and grandchildren would like.  This card was made with My Favorite Things Pure Innocence and Undeniable Chemistry and is for Monica.

00296w

I took some Canson XL 140# Cold Press Watercolor Paper and prepped it with an anti-static pad since I planned to emboss a background for the card.  I randomly stamped the chemical symbols from My Favorite Undeniable Chemistry, added Ranger Silver Embossing Powder and heat set with the Marvy Embossing Tool.

Since Monica’s favorite colors are burgundy and black I used Candied Apple, Seedless Preserves, Aged Mahogany, Hickory Smoke and Black Soot to ink blend the panel.  It was glued to a top folding cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# Black Cardstock.

The image from My Favorite Things Pure Innocence was stamped on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink since I planned to color it with Copic Markers (colors are listed below).  Once the image was colored it was run through the Sizzix Big Shot with the second Lawn Fawn Small stitched Stackable Rectangles.  A rectangle of Recollection Silver Mirror Cardstock was cut 1/8″ larger than the focal image and glued together with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.

Using Winnie & Walter the Big, the Bold and Party stamp set “birthday” was stamped in the lower right of the focal panel. WPlus9 Happy Trio was die cut from both Recollections Silver Mirror Cardstock and Darice Adhesive White Fun Foam and adhered together with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and then to the focal image.

Darice Adhesive White Fun Foam was glued to the back of the focal image and adhered to the background panel with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the card was done.

Hollyhock Happy Birthday

Having outline dies really let a stamped image stand out on the page. That is why I always purchase matching dies if they are available, but the same effect can be achieved by either fussy cutting the image or creating a cut file in the Silhouette Cameo software.  Instructions for creating a Silhouette cutout image can be found on my September 29, 2016, post entitled “Happy Birthday Princess with Silhouette Cameo.

Penny Black Hollyhocks was stamped on a matching outline with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and then colored with Copic Markers (colors are listed below).  To help the focal image to standout even more on the card an oval was cut from Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock using My Favorite Things Pierced Ovals STAX and then run through the Big Shot with the Darice Dots Embossing Folder.  3M 1/2″ Foam Tape was added to the back of the hollyhock image and adhered to the oval shape.  Another oval was cut from Darice Adhesive Fun Foam and trimmed to be slightly smaller than the cardstock oval.

Matching pink cardstock from my stash was cut to 5 1/4″ x 4″ and adhered to the front of a top folding cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.  This same glue was used to adhere the oval focal image to the front of the card.

The sentiment is from My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments.  It was stamped with VersaMark Ink on a strip of 120# Gina K. Designs Black Cardstock, heat embossed with Gina K. Designs White Fine Detail Embossing Powder.  Two fishtail ends were added and the strip was applied with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape.

Noble Deer Masculine Birthday Card

My brother-in-law is an avid hunter and my sister is a saint since their home and cabin is decorated in hundreds of stuffed animals.  Although I like to take pictures of these noble creatures, Kirk enjoys the challenge of the hunt and has done it in Russia, Alaska, Africa, New Zealand, to name a few, and all across the United States.  The Stampin’ Up Noble Deer is the perfect stamp for a card for Kirk.

00273aw

I began by using the Avery Elle Double Pierced Squares dies to create a square from Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock.  I love this cardstock when using Copic markers because it does not bleed through.  Next I stamped the image with Memento Espresso Truffle ink, however, I stamped off once to lighten the ink.  I used the following Copic Markers to color image.

  • Deer: E33, E35, E37, E41
  • Grass: Y93, Y95
  • Trees: E49, G28, G85
  • Cloud: C1, C2
  • Sky: BG0000, BG 10

I created a top folding A2 cardbase from Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardstock.  I cut some plaid cardstock I had in my stash with the rectangle from WPlus9 Gift Card Layers die and glued it directly to the cardbase with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.

Next I die cut some craft cardstock with the Lawn Fawn Small Stitched Stackable Rectangles and placed the focal image on top to determine where to stamp the sentiment from My Favorite Things Big Birthday Sentiments with Memento Espresso Truffle ink.  To add some interest I took some twine I had in my stash and tied it just above the sentiment and then used a pick to spread the ends.

Next I used some 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape to apply the focal image to the sentiment panel, and then I used some fun foam on the back of the craft panel, being sure to leave a channel for the thickness of the twine, and adhered it to the plaid cardbase with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the card was done.

Happy Birthday Chemistry Man

My son Patrick has a birthday this week.  His degree is in Chemistry and he manages an environmental lab in the Seattle area.  My Favorite Things Undeniable Chemistry was the perfect stamp and die set to create his birthday card.00272aw

I knew I wanted to create a shaker card with the beakers, but I wanted to have a colorful and chemistry related background.  I began by ink blending Distress inks on some Canson 140# Cold Press Watercolor Paper, colors used are listed below.  After getting the blending the way I wanted, I lightly spritzed the cardstock with water to further blend the colors and let it dry.

Next I determined where I wanted my sentiment and then prepared the cardstock with by Embossing Buddy to remove any oils, this ensures the embossing powder only adheres to where you have stamped.  I stamped the sentiment and chemistry symbols all around the card with VersaMark ink.  I used Ranger Super Fine Detail Gold Embossing Power and heat set it with the Marvy Embossing Tool.

First I sized the panel to 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ with the WPlus9 Gift Card Layers Rectangle.  I then die cut the beakers with the matching dies.  The first time I did this the tape tore the cardstock and I had to start all over again.  Once I had the openings for my shaker card, I glued some acetate to the back with Tombo Mono Multi Glue. Next, I used double thick 3M 1/2″ foam tape to create the wells and to support the card panel.  For the shaker wells I added Beader Paradise Anniversary and some multi-color beads I’ve had in my stash for years.  00272w

I was going to place the panel directly on a Gina K. Designs 120# Ivory Cardbase, but decided it would be easier to add a backer sheet just smaller than the panel first.  I used Fossilized Amber Distress Ink to blend the center of the backer sheet to give a glow behind the openings.  I then glued the card front to the cardbase with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the card was done.

I like the way the card tuned out, let’s hope Patrick likes it too.

Encouragement Cards: Every Journey Begins with a Single Step

I love making cards, which means that I spend a lot of time making them. I believe that each of us have been sent to earth with gifts and talents from the Lord, and He expects us to use our time and talents wisely.  I also believe that someday we will be accountable for what we have done with what we were given, like the parable of the talents in the New Testament.

As I was contemplating the amount of time I spend making cards, which I believe it is one of my talents, I felt that the Lord wanted me to do more to bless the lives of others with them, people outside of my family and friends.  There are people everywhere who need encouragement and kindness. So, I determined that I would make four cards every month and give them to an abused women and children’s home.  My hope is that they will help them as they begin to make major changes in their lives, and encourage them that they can do hard things for a better future.

Below are the cards I made this month. Each has the same sentiment I printed on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock.

00198For this card I die cut the sentiment panel with the scalloped rectangle from Winnie & Walter Audrey Essentials and adhered it with a Creative Hands Peel & Stick Foam Sheet to a side fold cardbase made from Gina K. Design 120# White Cardstock, cut to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored at 4 1/4″.

The flowers are from Simon Says Stamp Spring Florals, stamped with VersaMark Ink on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock, and heat embossed with Ranger Fine Detail Gold Embossing Powder. I decided to color the images with Copic Markers (I would probably not do that again, since I remember that embossing powder can ruin the nibs). The following colors were used: YR12, YR14, YR15; BG13, BG18; YG01, YG03, YG23; G21, YG63, G94; R11, R12, R02.

The flowers were adhered to the sentiment panel with Tombo Mono Multi Glue, with the exception of the pink flower, which has some 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape under the bloom.

00199

For this card I framed the sentiment with Pretty Pink Posh Scalloped Rectangles out of Gina K. Designs 100# Black Cardstock and adhered it to the sentiment panel with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape. The flower and leaves are from Simon Says Stamp Handwritten Floral Greetings, stamped on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock with VersaMark Ink and embossed with Ranger Fine Detail Gold Embossing Powder.  Both images were colored with Copic Markers Y15, Y17, Y19, G94, G99.

The leaves were glued with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the flower was adhered with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape. The scalloped panel was adhered with Creative Hands Peel & Stick Foam Sheets to a side folding cardbase, made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock, cut at 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored at 4 1/4″.

00200

For this card I die cut the sentiment with the Memory Box Stitched Rectangles Die and adhered it with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape to a side folding cardbase, made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock, cut at 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored at 4 1/4″.

The flower and leaves are from the Papertrey Ink The Sweet Life stamp set and die.  This is a layering stamp set and I used Altenew Inks Buttercream, Warm Sunshine, Mango Smoothie, Forest Glad, and Evergreen.  The leaves were adhered with Tombo Mono Multi Glue and the flower was adhered with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape for added dimension.

00197

For this card I die cut the sentiment with the second largest Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Stackable Rectangle die. To frame the sentiment I die cut a black frame from Gina K. Designs 100# Black Cardstock with the My Favorite Things Pierced Rectangle Frames. I placed the sentiment inside the frame and used Scotch Tape on the back to adhere the two together.  I then used a Creative Hands Peel & Stick Foam Sheet to adhere the panel to a side folding cardbase, made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock, cut at 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored at 4 1/4″.

The flower and leaves are from the Verve Great Friend Stamp set.  I used VersaMark Ink to stamp the images on Gina K. Designs 80# White Cardstock and embossed them with Ranger Fine Detail Gold Embossing Powder.  The leaves were a solid image and I really like the solid gold look. The flowers were colored with RV11, RV12, and RV14 Copic Markers. I fussy cut them out and adhered the single flower onto the double flower with 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape and glued the base flower to the frame with Tombo Mono Multi Glue.

Masculine Birthday: Stampin’ Up Angler

The Paper Studio Glasses, Staches & Ties paper pack has a couple of fish related patterned paper, which would make great cards for the fisherman in my family.  This time I used the black and white fish hook patterned paper.

00189I die cut the paper with the rectangle from Simon Says Stamp Bundle of Stitched Shapes and adhered it to a top folding cardbase made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock, cut to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored at 4 1/4″.

I stamped the image from Stampin’ Up Angler onto the same white cardstock with Hero Hues Black ink and die cut it using Spellbinders Wonky Shapes die and adhered it to the patterned paper with some Creative Hands Peel & Stick Foam Sheets.

I used a sentiment from My Favorite Thing Celebrate You stamp using only the top line of the sentiment with VersaMark ink by covering the bottom line with washi tape and then removing it before stamping onto some Gina K. Designs 100# Black Cardstock.  I used Recollections Snow Embossing Powder and heat set it with my Marvy Embossing Tool. To ensure that the embossing powder only stuck to the VersaMark ink, I prepared the paper with my embossing buddy prior to stamping.  I then cut the sentiment into a thin strip and applied it under the focal image with 3M 1/2″ foam Tape and the card was done.

00189aI like to add some element of the card to the inside of the card, as well as the envelope as seen in the picture above.

Happy Happy Birthday to You

The fourth card I made with background stamps was my favorite.  I used Hero Arts Flower Wallpaper stamp on Strathmore 140# Cold Press Watercolor paper, stamped with VersaMark ink and heat embossed with Stampin Stuff Clear Embossing Powder.

I applied Distress inks with Tsukineko Sponge Daubers. The following inks were used: Picket Raspberry, Wilted Violet, Spun Sugar, Spiced Marmalade, Mowed Lawn, Shaded Lilac, Tumbled Glass, and Mustard Seed. Using a water bottle a fine mist of water was added to the watercolor paper to help the colors blend.  The results were a bright and colorful background.

00153a

Once the background was dry a panel was cut with the largest Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Stackable Rectangle die.  The flowers received a coating of Spectrum Noir Clear Sparkle Pen.  Using the same die as the front panel a strip of heavy weight white vellum was run through the Big Shot twice so that it measured 1 3/8″ x 5 1/2″. The vellum was prepped with an anti-static bag and the sentiment from C. C. Designs Amy R. Great Birthday Greetings was stamped with VersaMark ink, sprinkled with Recollections Snow Embossing Powder and heat set with my Marvy Embossing Heat Tool.  The vellum greeting was centered on the bottom of the front panel, wrapped around the edge,s and taped in place with Scotch Tape.

3M 1/2″ Foam Tape was added to the back of the panel, which was then adhered to a cardbase 4 1/4″ x 11″ made from Gina K. Designs 120# White Cardstock and scored at 5 1/2″ for a  top folding card.

On the inside of the card a sentiment from My Favorite Things Birthday Greetings was stamped with Hero Hues Black ink. A strip of the watercolor background was added to the bottom of the page and the card was done.

What a Wonderful Day

The third card I made with background stamps used Hero Arts Lotus stamp on Strathmore 140# Cold Press Watercolor paper, stamped with VersaMark ink and heat embossed with Stampin Stuff Clear Embossing Powder.  Distress inks used were Tattered Rose, Spun Sugar, and Picked Raspberry and blended with Ranger’s round blending tool.  Using a spray bottle of water a fine mist of water was added to the watercolor paper to help the colors blend.

00152

This card was for my nephew Devin’s wedding to his fiancee Mandy. It turned out beautiful and elegant. Once the background was complete I used the largest Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Stackable Rectangle to cut the watercolor background to a panel 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and adhered it with Be Creative 5/8″ tape to a 4 1/4″ x 11″ cardbase, scored at 5 1/2″.

I wanted the background to take center stage so I cut a label from a leftover piece of Strathmore Watercolor paper with My Favorite Things Well-Worn Greetings die and stamped the sentiment from Penny Black’s Special Wishes with Hero Hues Black ink using my MISTI. 3M 1/2″ Foam Tape was added to the back of the label for dimension.

For embellishment I cut My Favorite Things Fancy Flourish die from heavy weight white vellum and curved it along the left edge of the label. Flowers were cut using My Favorite Things Flower and Leaf Trio die from Doodlebug Sprinkles White Vellum. The flowers were layered on top of each other and adhered with Micro Glue Dots. A pearl from Michaels Rhinestone Stickers was added to the center of the flower with Micro Glue Dot. To add dimension to the flower it was adhered to the label with a 3/8″ Zots Medium Glue Dot.

For the inside of the card I printed a quote from Elizabeth Browning; “Love doesn’t make the word go round, Love is what makes the ride worthwhile” on Gina K. Design 80# White Cardstock and cut it with the same My Favorite Things Well-Worn Greetings die as was used on the front. Another flourish and flower were added as well. A strip of the background was added to the bottom of the inside card and to the bottom of the envelope and the card was done.
